Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar Announces Water Tariff Hike in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Karnataka – Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar has announced an unavoidable increase in water tariffs due to financial difficulties faced by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Cauvery water at your doorstep’ campaign, Shivakumar noted that there has been no water tariff hike in the last 12-13 years, making the increase inevitable despite any opposition.

Shivakumar explained that without the tariff hike, the BWSSB might collapse, affecting its ability to support employees and manage operational costs, including electricity bills. The exact amount and segments for the hike are still being determined. He emphasized the need to invest in a larger distribution network to supply water to Bengaluru’s 140 crore people.

Addressing rising electricity costs, Shivakumar revealed plans to establish a captive power generation facility for Bengaluru’s utility companies, which will save significant money. He also rejected proposals for privatizing BWSSB services, citing past experiences where privatization led to increased costs without substantial benefits.

Shivakumar highlighted an increase in water supply by 6 million litres per day (MLD) since he took office and mentioned efforts to recharge groundwater and manage dried-up borewells. He also discussed proposals to bring drinking water to Bengaluru from KRS and Sharavathi, despite opposition.

Regarding security measures for the Governor, Shivakumar stated that the police have taken precautions due to potential threats from BJP and JDS miscreants. He also addressed the BJP’s protest against Congress for allegedly insulting the Governor, affirming that people are free to criticize anyone in a democracy.
