Doctors End Strike After Supreme Court Appeal Following Kolkata Hospital Tragedy

New Delhi, India – On August 22, doctors from several major hospitals, including Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and Indira Gandhi Hospital, ended their strike. The strike was in protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical Hospital in Kolkata.

Supreme Court’s Intervention

The Supreme Court of India appealed to the medical community to return to work. The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of Indira Gandhi Hospital officially called off their 11-day strike, emphasizing their commitment to public service and national interest.

The Supreme Court has taken up the case and directed a task force to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months. The court also assured that no action would be taken against the protesting doctors.

Statements from Hospitals

Indira Gandhi Hospital expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for addressing the safety and security of healthcare workers. They also commended the establishment of a national task force to ensure these concerns are addressed effectively.

Doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and AIIMS also ended their strikes and resumed services. The RDA of AIIMS stated that their decision to call off the strike was in response to the Supreme Court’s appeal and direction.

Supreme Court’s Remarks

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra, emphasized the importance of doctors returning to work for the functioning of public health infrastructure. The court also noted the long working hours of doctors in public hospitals and directed the Health Ministry to ensure the safety of doctors willing to return to work.
