Thailand’s Ambassador Pattarat Hongtong Visits Charaideo Maidam and Nalanda University
Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 21: Thailand’s Ambassador to India, Pattarat Hongtong, visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site Charaideo Maidam in Assam’s Sivasagar. Upon arrival, she was welcomed by Director Deepirekha Kuli from the Assam State Directorate of Archaeology and Member of Assam Legislative Assembly Dharmeshwar Konwar.
Hongtong toured the Maidam area and the Museum, taking pictures as she explored the site. She also visited the Ahom Royal Moon Dun Chun Kham Buddhist Vihar in Lakuwa Charmuthia and interacted with villagers in Shyam village, Chalapatha. Speaking to reporters, she expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to learn about the local culture and heritage.
The maidams in Charaideo are burial grounds of Ahom Kings and Queens, comparable to the pyramids of Egypt, showcasing the brilliant architecture and craftsmanship of medieval Assam.
On June 19, amidst the ruins of the ancient Nalanda University in Bihar, several ambassadors, including Hongtong, gathered to witness the inauguration of the new campus by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hongtong emphasized the cultural ties between India and Southeast Asia, noting the significance of Nalanda University in the Buddhist circuit for Thai people.
The diplomats’ visit highlighted the enduring legacy of Nalanda University as a hub of ancient knowledge and its modern significance as a symbol of cultural exchange and historical preservation.
