Supreme Court Questions West Bengal Police Over RG Kar Medical College Incident
The Supreme Court of India has raised serious concerns about the West Bengal police’s handling of a mob attack at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The court questioned the police about delays in filing the First Information Report (FIR) and handing over the body of a doctor who was allegedly murdered.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra, expressed deep concern over the safety of medical professionals in the country. The court has set up a national task force to address these issues.
The court criticized the college’s principal for trying to pass off the incident as a suicide and noted that the parents were not allowed to see the body. The court also highlighted a three-hour delay in registering the FIR after the body was handed over for cremation.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal confirmed that the inquest showed it was a case of murder. The court was also informed that women doctors were threatened by a mob, and police officers stationed at the hospital ran away and hid during the attack.
The Supreme Court directed the deployment of sufficient CISF personnel at RG Kar Medical College for the safety of doctors and urged medical professionals across the country to return to their duties.
