Heavy Rain Causes Traffic Jams and Waterlogging in Delhi
On Tuesday, heavy rain in Delhi caused severe traffic congestion and waterlogging in several parts of the city. Commuters faced significant problems due to the waterlogged streets.
Areas Affected
Parts of Delhi, including the NSUI Office, ITO, Raisina, and Jantar Mantar, experienced severe waterlogging. Near Ashram Bridge, the situation was particularly bad after continuous rainfall. On Minto Road, parked vehicles were submerged in water.
Commuter Struggles
An autorickshaw driver named Munil Mehto shared his experience: “My vehicle suddenly stopped. I asked a few drivers to help me. To save my life, I came out of the car. The vehicle’s paper is still in it.” He added, “I urged other drivers to help me make my vehicle out but I was not able to cross this road.”
Political Reactions
The Delhi BJP Unit criticized Delhi Minister Aatishi and the AAP government for the ongoing waterlogging issues. They questioned the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to clean the drains.
Government Response
Water Minister Atishi took action by directing the Chief Secretary to mobilize government machinery to address sewer overflow complaints. She assigned senior IAS officers to each of DJB’s 11 circles to find both short-term and long-term solutions. These teams will be monitored by the Chief Secretary, who will submit biweekly reports to the Water Minister.
