US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Urges Hamas to Accept Ceasefire Proposal in Israel
Tel Aviv, Israel – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Israel has accepted a proposal to bridge gaps in ceasefire negotiations and urged Hamas to do the same. Speaking in Tel Aviv, Blinken said, “In a very constructive meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu today, he confirmed to me that Israel accepts the bridging proposal and supports it. It’s now incumbent on Hamas to do the same.”
Blinken emphasized the importance of all parties, with the help of mediators from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, coming together to finalize the agreement. He stated, “The next important step is for Hamas to say yes, and then, in the coming days, for all of the expert negotiators to get together to work on clear understandings on implementing the agreement.”
Despite Israel’s acceptance, significant challenges remain as Hamas has not yet agreed to the proposal. Blinken noted the urgency of the situation, saying, “Intervening events come along that may make things even more difficult, if not impossible.”
Blinken’s visit to Tel Aviv is part of a broader effort to finalize a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza. He described this moment as “probably the best, maybe the last, opportunity to get the hostages home, to get a ceasefire, and to put everyone on a better path to enduring peace and security.”
During a three-hour meeting with Netanyahu, Blinken and the Israeli PM’s office announced that Israel had agreed to the bridging proposal. The meeting was termed constructive, and Netanyahu expressed commitment to sending senior negotiators to complete the process in either Qatar or Egypt.
While the exact details of the bridging proposal are unclear, it was put forward by the US with the support of Qatar and Egypt after two days of talks in Doha. The mediators are working to establish clear understandings on how the different parties will fulfill their commitments.
Hamas has expressed concerns about the proposal, accusing Netanyahu of hindering a deal and reiterating its desire to implement a three-phase proposal presented by US President Joe Biden. Netanyahu, however, has insisted on not giving in to Hamas’ demands to end the war in Gaza as a condition of a deal.
Blinken’s visit to Tel Aviv is his ninth since the war between Israel and Hamas started in October. He will continue his diplomatic efforts by traveling to Egypt and Qatar.
