Football Fans Protest Near Salt Lake Stadium Over Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Incident
Football fans gathered near Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata to protest the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protests led to the cancellation of the iconic derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Emami East Bengal FC in the ongoing Durand Cup.
Fans from both clubs united in their peaceful protest, which was met with police action. A fan said, “Before Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, we are Indians. Atrocity has happened against an Indian woman. We were protesting peacefully here. But the police started a lathi charge.”
Due to the unrest, the second quarter-final match of the Durand Cup was moved from Kolkata to Shillong. Another fan questioned, “Where did such a lot of police force come from? You had said there is no police force and will not be able to give police protection (for the match). Why did the police lathi charge?”
