CBI Begins Psychological Testing in Kolkata Trainee Doctor’s Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started psychological testing of the main suspect in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, West Bengal. A psychologist from the CBI team arrived in Kolkata on Saturday to assist with the investigation.
The tragic incident has sparked nationwide outrage, leading to various protests. West Bengal Congress workers held a rally, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community staged a protest on Saturday, demanding justice for the victim. Junior doctors and medical students also protested at Mangalagiri AIIMS Hospital and Delhi’s Lady Hardinge Medical College.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) National President Asokan stated on Saturday that it is time for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the case. The IMA plans to write to the Prime Minister regarding the incident.
On August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 people invaded RG Kar Hospital, attacking protesting doctors and medical students and attempting to ransack the premises. Security officials had to disperse the crowd. On August 16, Kolkata police arrested 19 individuals allegedly involved in the mob violence.
The trainee doctor was found dead on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, triggering nationwide protests by doctors and medical professionals.
