Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], August 16: Advocate Chandresh Jain has filed a petition before the President of India, challenging the Lok Sabha membership of Amritpal Singh. Jain has also sent a copy of the petition to the Election Commission of India.

On August 9, the Supreme Court dismissed Jain’s petition against Amritpal Singh, stating, “We are not inclined to entertain this petition. The writ petition is, accordingly, dismissed.”

Jain is now urging the President to direct the Election Commission to declare Amritpal Singh’s Lok Sabha membership, which he won from Khadur Sahib constituency in Punjab during the 2024 elections, as illegal and unconstitutional. Jain claims that the oath and affirmation filed by Singh during his nomination and subsequent oath-taking are false and invalid.

Jain’s petition argues that Singh’s nomination and election should be nullified due to his actions against the sovereignty, integrity, and unity of India. He also requests the government to enact laws preventing separatist and secessionist candidates from contesting elections in India.

Amritpal Singh, originally from Jallu Kheda village in Amritsar, won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate. He is currently in jail in Assam’s Dibrugarh district. Singh, who lived in Dubai before returning to Punjab in 2022, became the chief of the pro-Khalistani organization Waris Punjab De after the death of Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu. He was arrested in 2023 after a protest and clash with police in Ajnala.

Despite his imprisonment, Singh was granted a four-day custody parole to take his oath as a Lok Sabha member.
