Tariq Hameed Karra Appointed as New President of Jammu and Kashmir Congress

The Indian National Congress has made significant changes in its leadership for Jammu and Kashmir. Tariq Hameed Karra has been appointed as the new President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), replacing Vikar Rasool Wani. Alongside him, Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla have been named as the working presidents of the Jammu and Kashmir PCC.

Vikar Rasool Wani, the outgoing PCC President, has been appointed as the Special Invitee of the Congress Working Committee. The official notice from the All India Congress Committee stated, “Congress President has appointed the President and Working Presidents of the Jammu & Kashmir PCC as follows, with immediate effect. PCC President – Tariq Hameed Karra, Working Presidents – Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla. Congress President has also appointed Vikar Rasool Wani as Special Invitee, Congress Working Committee, with immediate effect. Tariq Hameed Karra has been relieved from his current position as a Permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee. The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing PCC President, Vikar Rasool Wani.”

Upcoming Assembly Elections

The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases. The first phase will take place on September 18, the second on September 25, and the third on October 1. The results will be announced on October 4. Rajiv Kumar, addressing a press conference, confirmed these dates and added that the nominations for the first phase will be filed on August 27, for the second phase on September 5, and for the third phase on September 12.

Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 90 assembly constituencies, with 74 General, nine ST, and seven SC seats. The region has 87.09 lakh total electors, including 44.46 lakh males, 42.62 lakh females, 169 transgender individuals, 82,590 PwDs, 73,943 very senior citizens, 2,660 centenarians, 76,092 service electors, and 3.71 lakh first-time voters.

This election is significant as it will be the first in ten years, following the last assembly election in 2014 and the fall of the PDP-BJP coalition government in June 2018.
