New Delhi, August 16: The Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius, Duval Adrien Charles, visited India and met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the Parliament House Complex. Birla congratulated Duval on his appointment and noted that Duval’s first state visit as Speaker was to India, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations.

Birla expressed hope that under Duval’s leadership, cooperation between India and Mauritius in international parliamentary forums like the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) would continue to grow. He also mentioned India’s 78th Independence Day celebrations and the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, which saw millions of Indian families hoisting the national flag.

Birla emphasized the success of India’s parliamentary democracy and the country’s growth as the 5th largest economy in the world. He highlighted the socio-economic changes in India over the past 78 years and the importance of discussion and dialogue in solving national issues and promoting development.

Birla noted the cultural and spiritual similarities between India and Mauritius, which strengthen people-to-people connections. He mentioned the significant number of Indian tourists visiting Mauritius annually and expressed hope for deeper cooperation in areas like digitalization and Artificial Intelligence.

Birla also spoke about the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) and its role in parliamentary training, benefiting legislators and officials from over 100 countries. He stressed the importance of exchanging parliamentary delegations to enhance cooperation between India and Mauritius.

Duval expressed his gratitude for the visit and congratulated Birla on his reelection as Lok Sabha Speaker. He also extended congratulations on India’s 78th Independence Day and praised the Indian electoral process. Duval highlighted the privileged relationship between India and Mauritius and thanked Sansad TV for its assistance to the Mauritian Parliament. He mentioned the Digital Transformation Program for the Mauritian Parliament, inspired by India’s Digital Sansad initiative, and emphasized closer cooperation in digital technology and training.
