Sweden Reports First Case of Dangerous Mpox Clade I Variant
Stockholm, Sweden – On August 15, Sweden confirmed its first case of the mpox Clade I variant, a more dangerous form of the mpox disease that spreads through close contact. This marks the first case of this variant outside Africa.
Government Announcement
Health and Social Affairs Minister Jakob Forssmed announced the case during a news conference. The infected person contracted the virus during a trip to a part of Africa experiencing a major outbreak of mpox Clade I and is now receiving care in Stockholm.
Global Public Health Emergency
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that has spread to other countries. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also declared mpox a public health emergency on the continent.
