Doctors and Students at RG Kar Medical College Demand Justice for Trainee Doctor
Doctors and medical students at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata are protesting for justice after the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee.
Addressing the media, Dr. Lahari Sarkar, a resident doctor, stated, “We welcome the CBI probe but will continue our protests until the culprits are identified and punished.”
The protesters are also demanding the installation of CCTV cameras, better security measures, and compensation for the victim’s parents. Dr. Sarkar added, “We have proposed the stepdown of the authorities responsible at the time of the incident.”
Emergency services at the hospital will continue, but OPD services are currently halted. Dr. Sarkar emphasized, “Our emergency services are still open, but OPD services are not functional right now.”
The protests will persist until all demands are met, with another general meeting planned to discuss the duration of the strikes.
Earlier, the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the incident and asked the Kolkata Police to hand over all documents to the CBI. Protests were also held at AIIMS Delhi in solidarity, following a call for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services by the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA).
Former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, resigned after being defamed on social media following the incident. He has been asked to submit a leave application by the Calcutta High Court.
