Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Alleges Conspiracy in Education and Flooding Issues

Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that there is a conspiracy to destroy education in Assam. He defended his earlier comments on the Meghalaya University of Science and Technology (USTM), drawing parallels with former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s statements about Jorabat causing floods in Guwahati.

Sarma stated, “When I spoke about Meghalaya University of Science and Technology (USTM), everyone criticised me. But earlier, Tarun Gogoi had said that Jorabat is the main reason for floods in Guwahati.” He alleged that the Congress party, including Tarun Gogoi’s son, Gaurav Gogoi, had verbally attacked him for mentioning USTM.

Sarma questioned the geographical factors contributing to the floods, asking, “Why did the hills cut towards Guwahati and not towards Meghalaya? Is this not flood jihad?” He further alleged a “big conspiracy” to undermine Assam’s education system.

Earlier, Sarma had claimed that USTM was waging a “flood jihad” by demolishing hills around its campus to build new structures, contributing to waterlogging in Guwahati. He posted satellite images of Meghalaya’s Greater Jorabat Hills, showing deforestation near USTM, and explained how cloud bursts in the area lead to rapid floods in Guwahati. Sarma stated, “We will work with Meghalaya Govt to protect our shared habitats.”

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised Sarma on social media, saying, “Can someone stop the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa, from his jihad of repeated nonsense? It is simply an exaggerated cover up for his failures and scams.”

On August 7, during a convocation ceremony, Sarma mentioned that the drains in Guwahati cannot handle rapid water drainage, leading to artificial flooding. He blamed USTM for cutting mountains to establish the university, which he claimed should have been opposed by the Assam government. Sarma also mentioned discussing the issue with the Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
