Maulana Fazlur Rehman Criticizes Pakistan’s Government and Calls for New Elections
Islamabad, Pakistan – August 12: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), has criticized the government over Pakistan’s economic situation. He called the members of Parliament “fake representatives” of the people. Rehman has been demanding fresh elections since he labeled the February 9 general elections as “rigged”.
Following the 2024 elections, JUI-F fell out with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) due to allegations of vote rigging and manipulation. Rehman has also been in talks with Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to devise a strategy for new elections.
Addressing a traders’ convention in Peshawar, Rehman said, “Fake representatives of the people are sitting in Parliament, not the real ones, […] who don’t think about the masses.” He criticized the government for increased taxes, saying, “The only thing that has not been taxed yet is breathing.”
Jamat-e-Islami (JI) is also pushing for a reduction in taxes and recently ended a nearly two-week-long protest in Rawalpindi after successful negotiations with the federal government.
Rehman questioned why sub-standard wheat was imported when local farmers had it in stock. He called for the facilitation of traders and farmers, stating that the country wouldn’t stabilize without a strong economy. He added that Pakistan is in a critical situation and his party could help strengthen the economy.
