Sardar Sarovar Dam Gates Opened in Gujarat Due to Heavy Rainfall
On Sunday morning, five gates of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in the Narmada district of Gujarat were opened, releasing around 1 lakh cusecs of water. This action was taken as a precautionary measure due to the rising water levels in the Narmada River, which reached 134.50 meters, just 4 meters below the maximum level of 138.68 meters.
Villages located in the coastal areas around the Narmada River, including those in Bharuch and Vadodara, have been put on alert. The dam, located near the town of Kevadiya, was built to provide water and electricity to the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
The Met Centre Ahmedabad has issued a yellow alert for Gujarat for August 11 and 12. Earlier, on August 5, Vansda Police in Navsari rescued several tourists stranded in Vangan Village due to heavy rainfall that caused the Kaveri River to overflow. The rescue operation involved tourists holding onto a rope to be safely evacuated.
Additionally, heavy rainfall has led to severe flooding in Valsad, with rising water levels in the Auranga River. People from low-lying areas have been moved to safer locations. The state has been experiencing severe downpours over the past few days.
