Thane (Maharashtra) [India], August 10: Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Jitendra Awhad criticized the Centre over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, calling it an attack on Waqf lands meant for the poor. He praised Supriya Sule for opposing the bill and highlighting its faults.

Supriya Sule, an NCP (SCP) MP, urged the government to either withdraw the bill or send it to a standing committee, emphasizing the need for consultations. In response to opposition, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju proposed sending the bill to a joint parliamentary committee.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aims to rename the Waqf Act, 1995, and introduce several changes, including defining “waqf” more clearly, ensuring women’s inheritance rights, and reforming the Tribunal structure. A 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee has been formed to review the bill.
