Shashi Tharoor Hopes PM Modi Declares Kerala Landslides a National Disaster

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed hope that the central government would declare the landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, which claimed over 300 lives, as a national disaster. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the affected areas on Saturday, conducted an aerial survey, and met with survivors.

Speaking at an event in Chennai, Tharoor mentioned that it would have been better if the Prime Minister had visited earlier to assess the situation. He said, “I hope that with PM Modi’s visit, the government will now make it a point to go ahead and declare this a national disaster so that the appropriate level of assistance can follow.”

PM Modi assured all assistance for relief and rehabilitation after inspecting the landslide-hit areas. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Union Minister Suresh Gopi, and Kerala ADGP (law and order) MR Ajith Kumar. The Prime Minister also met with the injured and interacted with survivors in relief camps.

In a review meeting, PM Modi reassured that the Central Government and the country are with the disaster-affected victims in their hour of grief. A detailed memorandum will be sent by the Chief Minister, requesting the central government to declare this as a national disaster and a severe calamity.
