Muhammad Yunus to Lead Interim Government in Bangladesh Amidst Political Turmoil
Dhaka, Bangladesh – Nobel Laureate economist Muhammad Yunus, known for founding Grameen Bank and winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, is set to lead the interim government in Bangladesh. Upon his return to Bangladesh, Yunus made a heartfelt appeal to his supporters, urging the people to maintain calm and end chaos. He emphasized that it is the ‘first responsibility’ to ensure no attacks are carried out against anyone in the country.
Yunus addressed a crowded press briefing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, stating, ‘If you have faith in me and trust me, then ensure that there will be no attack anywhere in the country. This is our first responsibility.’ He highlighted Bangladesh’s tremendous potential and stressed the importance of saving the country from chaos to proceed on the ‘path shown by students.’
Bangladesh is currently facing a fluid political situation following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, amidst mounting student-led protests against a quota system for government jobs. The protests have escalated into anti-government demonstrations, leading to violence and targeting of Awami League offices, members, and minority communities.
Yunus praised the youth for their campaign, calling it Bangladesh’s second ‘Victory Day.’ He spoke to student leaders of the anti-quota campaign and members of civil society, some of whom may form the interim government. Yunus emphasized that the benefits of freedom must reach every home in Bangladesh, otherwise achieving it a second time would be meaningless.
He also paid tribute to Abu Sayed, a student killed during police firing in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, saying, ‘His image is etched in every heart. The courage he showed in standing, arms outstretched in front of police firing … no one was afraid after that.’
The interim government, led by Yunus, will take the oath tonight. Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that the ceremony will be held at 8:00 pm local time, with around 400 dignitaries in attendance. The interim government is expected to comprise 15 members, although their names and tenure have not been disclosed.
