Vinesh Phogat, a celebrated Indian wrestler, has announced her retirement following her disqualification from the 50 kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics. She shared her decision in an emotional post on X, expressing her heartbreak and gratitude.

Her sister, Geeta Phogat, who is also a renowned wrestler, congratulated Vinesh and called her an inspiration for women. Geeta expressed that the country will always be indebted to Vinesh for her contributions to wrestling.

Vinesh was disqualified for breaching the weight limit after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semi-finals. Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment over the disqualification, noting that Vinesh is physically fine but mentally disappointed. Efforts were made to help her manage her weight, but they were unsuccessful.

Vinesh has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to award her the silver medal, with a verdict expected soon. Throughout her career, Vinesh has won multiple medals, including two World Championships bronze medals, an Asian Games gold, and three Commonwealth Games gold medals.
