New Delhi [India], August 5: Congress leaders have urged the Indian government to address the political crisis in Bangladesh, focusing on border security and the safety of Indian citizens living there.

Calls for Action

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi emphasized the need for cooperation between state and central governments to ensure safety. He stated, “Given the current situation in Bangladesh, we have to keep our borders safe.” He also called for the central government to inform the nation about the situation and ensure the safety of Indians in Bangladesh.

MP Karti P Chidambaram expressed concerns about a potential influx of refugees. He said, “We got to see how the current situation is going to affect our border security. If there are any Indian citizens in Bangladesh we have to make sure that they are all safe.” He added that all political parties would support the central government to prioritize national interests.

Unrest in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left Dhaka after weeks of unrest. The Army Chief, General Waqar-uz-Zaman, announced an interim government. Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on a military transport aircraft, accompanied by her sister.

Protests in Bangladesh led to the vandalism of key buildings, including the Prime Minister’s residence, Sudha Sadan, and the Chief Justice’s residence. Protesters also disrupted operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for six hours.
