US Embassy Urges Americans to Leave Lebanon Amid Rising Tensions with Hezbollah
The US Embassy in Lebanon has issued an urgent advisory for American citizens to leave the country due to increasing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The embassy noted that while several airlines have suspended or canceled flights, commercial transportation options are still available.
In its advisory, the embassy stated, “We encourage those who wish to depart Lebanon to book any ticket available to them, even if that flight does not depart immediately or does not follow their first-choice route.” The embassy also mentioned that US citizens who lack funds to return home can contact the embassy for financial assistance via repatriation loans.
The advisory further urged citizens to prepare contingency plans for emergency situations and to be ready to shelter in place if necessary. It emphasized the importance of having travel documents in order, keeping cell phones charged, and monitoring the news closely for any developments.
In addition to the advisory, the US Department of Defense announced the deployment of additional fighter jets and Navy ships to West Asia to defend Israel. This move is in response to threats from Iran and Iranian-backed militias. The Pentagon is also increasing its readiness to deploy more land-based ballistic missile defense systems.
US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Biden discussed efforts to support Israel’s defense against threats, including new defensive US military deployments, and stressed the importance of de-escalating broader regional tensions.
