Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Announces New Tata Semiconductor Plant in Assam
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the construction of a new semiconductor plant in Morigaon, Assam, by Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd. The plant, approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will create 15,000 direct and 11,000 to 13,000 indirect jobs. With an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, the facility will produce 4.83 crore chips per day, using advanced technologies developed in India.
The project aims to boost industries like automotive and communications. The first phase of the plant is expected to be operational by mid-2025. The plant will focus on three key platform technologies: Wire Bond, Flip Chip, and Integrated Systems Packaging (ISP), with plans to expand to advanced packaging technologies in the future.
The semiconductor plant will play a crucial role in the semiconductor value chain, assembling and testing wafers before they are used in products. The project is part of the Government of India’s Semiconductor policy and the Government of Assam’s Electronics policy, driven by the India Semiconductor Mission.
Nearly 85,000 industry-ready professionals are being trained in semiconductor chip design at 113 academic institutions across the country, including nine in the northeast region.
