Supreme Court Upholds Renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv

The Supreme Court of India has upheld the Bombay High Court’s decision to reject a petition against the renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad cities in Maharashtra. The cities will now be known as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv, respectively.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti confirmed the Bombay High Court’s order, stating that the state had followed the legal procedures before changing the names. The court acknowledged that there will be differences in opinion on such matters, with some agreeing and others disagreeing with the changes.

The petition challenging the renaming was brought by Sheikh Masood Ismail Sheikh and others. The Bombay High Court had previously rejected the plea in May, quoting Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’: ‘What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.’
