Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath Vows Justice for Gomtinagar Harassment Incident
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), August 1: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has stated that ensuring women’s safety is a top priority for his government. He assured that those responsible for the Gomtinagar harassment incident will face severe punishment.
The Chief Minister’s statement came after a video showed a couple being harassed by a crowd in Gomtinagar, Lucknow. The couple fell off their motorcycle after water was splashed on them by the crowd near a flooded underpass close to the Hotel Taj.
Adityanath announced the suspension of several police officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Additional DCP, and Assistant Commissioner of Police for Gomtinagar. The SHO of Gomtinagar, Deepak Pandey, Police Outpost Incharge Rishi Vivek, Sub-Inspector Kapil Kumar, and Constables Dharamvir and Kapil Kumar were also suspended.
Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra raised the issue in the Assembly, leading to the arrest of four individuals: Pawan Yadav, Sunil Kumar, Mohammad Arbaaz, and Viraj Sahu. They have been booked under sections 191(2) (rioting) and 74 (assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A manhunt is underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.
