Kerala Landslide Tragedy: BJP’s K Surendran and CM Pinarayi Vijayan Clash Over Warnings

Kerala BJP chief K Surendran has criticized the state government for ignoring central warnings about potential landslides in Wayanad, which resulted in 167 deaths. He claimed that the Kerala government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, ignored alerts sent by the central government.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah supported Surendran’s claim, stating that early warnings were issued on July 23, 24, 25, and 26. Shah emphasized that effective early warning systems in other states have saved lives and that the Kerala government should be held accountable.

However, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan refuted these claims, explaining that the actual rainfall far exceeded predictions. He stated that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had only issued an orange alert for the district prior to the landslides, and the area received much more rainfall than expected.

Vijayan stressed that this is not the time for blame and called for immediate action to rescue those affected and rebuild the area. He also highlighted the need for proactive steps to address climate change and prevent future disasters.
