West Pakistani Refugees Celebrate Property Rights in Jammu and Kashmir
The Administrative Council in Jammu and Kashmir, led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, has approved the granting of proprietary rights to West Pakistan displaced persons and those displaced in 1965. This significant decision was made during a meeting in Srinagar, attended by key officials including Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Atal Dulloo, and Mandeep K Bhandari.
This move ends long-standing discrimination against West Pakistan displaced persons by granting them ownership of state land, bringing them on par with other displaced persons from POJK. The decision fulfills the demands of these families, who have been requesting ownership rights for decades.
Refugee leaders Labha Ram Gandhi and Sukhdev Singh expressed their joy, highlighting the importance of this decision after 75 years of waiting. The refugees celebrated by distributing sweets and raising slogans in support of the government.
Labha Ram Gandhi stated, “We have been feeling happiness since yesterday. It is such a big decision. It should have been made a year ago.” Sukhdev Singh added, “We express our gratitude to the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor.”
