Nityanand Rai Discusses BSF Vacancies and Disaster Response Efforts in Rajya Sabha
New Delhi, July 31, 2024: Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, announced that there are 10,145 vacant posts in the Border Security Force (BSF) as of July 1, 2024. In the last five years, 7,372 new posts were created, and 54,760 personnel were recruited. Rai stated, ‘Creation of posts and Cadre restructuring is an ongoing process based on the operational requirement of the force. The sanctioned strength of BSF as of July 1, 2024, is 2,65,808 and the posted strength is 2,55,663.’
He also mentioned that the upper age limit for Ex-Agniveers will be relaxed by up to three years, with an additional five-year relaxation for the first batch of the Agnipath Scheme. Ex-Agniveers will be exempted from the Physical Efficiency Test (PET).
Regarding the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Rai shared that 2,615 cases were registered between 2020 and 2022. He clarified that there is no provision for detention centers under UAPA.
On disaster response, Rai highlighted that the responsibility of raising and equipping the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) lies with the State/UT Governments. The Central Government, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), conducts annual capacity-building workshops and provides a list of disaster response equipment to assist the State/UT Governments.
