West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose Visits Wayanad After Tragic Landslides
West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose visited Wayanad, Kerala, following devastating landslides. He assured that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to providing all necessary support for rescue and relief operations.
Governor’s Visit
Governor Bose visited relief camps and spoke with victims. He also visited the Government Higher Secondary School and Meppady Community Hall, which are being used for postmortems and as a temporary mortuary, respectively.
Rescue Operations
The Kerala Revenue Department reported that the death toll has risen to 158. Rescue operations continue with 1200 personnel from the Indian Army, DSC centre, Territorial Army, NDRF, Indian Navy, and IAF. Brigadier Arjun Seagan mentioned that 500 to 600 personnel are actively involved in the rescue efforts.
The Indian Army has evacuated over 1,000 people using man-made bridges and human effort, while the Indian Air Force conducted search and rescue operations despite adverse conditions.
Impact of Landslides
The landslides struck on Tuesday morning in Mundakkai and Chooralmala, causing widespread destruction. Homes, roads, and trees were damaged, and water bodies swelled, hindering rescue efforts. Many areas, including Meppadi, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala, have been isolated, and roads have been washed away. The Vellarmala GVH School was completely buried.
