Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon Hopes for Stronger India-Maldives Ties
Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon expressed optimism about New Delhi and Male’s relationship getting back on track after recent diplomatic tensions. She highlighted the importance of economic independence and criticized past governments for wasteful spending.
President Mohamed Muizzu thanked India and China for their support in easing the Maldives’ debt repayment and announced negotiations for Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with the United Kingdom and India. He emphasized the need to alleviate local shortages of US dollars through currency swap agreements with New Delhi and Beijing.
Maumoon hopes the current government will negotiate an FTA for the benefit of Maldivians and ensure that international relations remain consistent and not influenced by changing governments. She pointed out the economic challenges in the Maldives, including high unemployment among young people and the concentration of wealth in a few hands, particularly in tourism.
Tensions between India and the Maldives have risen since Muizzu took office, leading to a shift in alliances with China. In May, India exited its military from the Maldives after a demand by President Muizzu. Efforts have been made to restore the relationship, including high-level visits and debt relief measures. Muizzu emphasized that India remains the Maldives’ closest ally.
