Dambulla, Sri Lanka – July 29: Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu shared her thoughts on her future in international cricket after leading her team to victory over India in the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 final. The match took place at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday.

Outstanding performances from Harshitha Samawickrama and Chamari Athapaththu helped Sri Lanka win by eight wickets. Athapaththu expressed her desire to participate in two more ICC tournaments: the T20 World Cup this year and the 50-over World Cup next year in India.

“Hopefully I will still play until the next 50-over World Cup,” said Athapaththu.

She also expressed her happiness with the team’s performance and emphasized the importance of inspiring future generations of female cricketers. “I am feeling happy, I am happy about my team’s performance, especially the batting. A special thanks to Harshita and Dilhari for their performances. It is not a one-man show, the coaching staff has been great and finally we have won the Asia Cup. Special thanks to the Sri Lanka crowd, they supported our girls and I am really happy. This win is really good for our team, we have to inspire girls in the future, so it is special for Sri Lanka. It is my duty to lead from the front, that’s my duty for the country and my team,” she added.

India batted first and scored 165/6 in their 20 overs, with notable contributions from Smriti Mandhana (60 runs), Richa Ghosh (30 runs), and Jemimah Rodrigues (29 runs). For Sri Lanka, Dilhari was the standout bowler, taking two wickets. Udeshika Prabodhani, Sachini Nisansala, and Athapaththu each took one wicket.

Sri Lanka chased down the target of 166 runs in the 19th over, thanks to impressive knocks from Harshitha Samawickrama (69* runs) and Chamari Athapaththu (61 runs). Deepti was the only Indian bowler to take a wicket.

Harshitha Samawickrama was named Player of the Match, while Chamari Athapaththu was awarded Player of the Tournament for her 346 runs in five matches, including a century and two fifties, and three wickets.
