Swati Maliwal Seeks Justice for UPSC Aspirants After Tragic Flood in Delhi

Swati Maliwal, an MP from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has called for a discussion in the Rajya Sabha regarding the deaths of three UPSC aspirants due to a flooded basement in their coaching center in West Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar. She demands justice and compensation for the victims’ families.

On July 27, the basement of the coaching center was flooded, leading to the tragic deaths. Maliwal posted on X, stating, “I have filed notice today for suspension of business of Rajya Sabha under Rule 267 for discussion on the pertinent issue before the nation – justice and compensation for the 4 UPSC aspirants who have died in Patel Nagar and Rajinder Nagar. Voice of the students will not go unheard.”

Meanwhile, Delhi BJP workers and leaders protested against the AAP government in Delhi, near the AAP Office, over the Old Rajinder Nagar incident. A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in Delhi High Court, seeking the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the incident and the role of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officers who allegedly failed to act on a complaint received on June 26, 2024.

The Delhi Police arrested the owner and coordinator of the coaching center in connection with the incident and charged them with culpable homicide among other charges. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi sealed seven properties and three basements for violating building by-laws in Karol Bagh Zone.

Following the tragedy, students staged protests, demanding justice from the government and action against illegally used basements. The incident has ignited a political blame game among parties.
