EAM S Jaishankar Highlights Quad’s Achievements at Tokyo Meeting
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction with the progress made during the Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Tokyo. He highlighted the extensive agenda that the Quad has developed over the years, mentioning the 16 working groups focused on advancing and resourcing the Quad better.
Jaishankar, addressing the press alongside Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, emphasized the practical outcomes generated by the Quad. He mentioned various initiatives, including trusted telecom technology, undersea cable connectivity, humanitarian and disaster relief, critical and emerging technologies, cyber and health security, climate action, infrastructure, capacity building and training, STEM education, maritime domain awareness, and counter-terrorism.
He noted that the Quad is not just a ‘talk shop’ but a platform that produces tangible results. Examples include the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness initiative, the deployment of the Open-RAN network in Palau, a space-based climate warning system in Mauritius, and off-grid solar projects in Indo-Pacific islands. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Quad countries cooperated to deliver vaccines to the region.
Jaishankar also highlighted the strong interaction between the Quad countries and their bilateral and trilateral relationships, which enhances the value of the Quad. He expressed his satisfaction with how deeply and systemically the Quad has become embedded in their foreign policies, with various government agencies and stakeholders regularly interacting to advance the Quad’s agenda.
He concluded by thanking Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko for hosting the meeting and emphasized the importance of stability, security, progress, and prosperity through trusted partnerships and international cooperation.
