Jamaat-e-Islami Protest in Islamabad: Sit-in Moved to Murree Road
Following a police crackdown on Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) supporters during a sit-in at D-Chowk in Islamabad, the district administration has allowed the party to hold a sit-in on Murree Road for two or three days. This decision came after negotiations between Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner, CPO Rawalpindi, and JI leadership.
The JI has shifted its two sit-ins at different places in Islamabad to Murree Road, where party chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman will address the participants. He will also update supporters on the talks with the administration.
The protest is against the hike in power tariffs, inflated electricity bills, and other pressing issues. Earlier, Islamabad police had asked JI supporters to vacate D-Chowk, where the sit-in was initially called.
Minister for Information Atta Tarar urged JI leadership to engage in dialogue with the government after several JI supporters were arrested. The government has formed a three-member committee, including Atta Tarar, Amir Muqam, and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, to negotiate with JI leadership.
JI spokesperson Qaiser Sharif claimed that 500 workers heading to Islamabad were arrested during the sit-in, calling it the ‘worst example of police terrorism.’ He stated that police raided the homes of office-bearers and workers, violating their privacy by making videos of their homes and arresting even the guests.
