Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram Criticizes Agnipath Scheme Amid Kargil Vijay Diwas Celebrations
New Delhi [India], July 26: Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram has voiced strong criticism against the Agnipath scheme, arguing that it does not enhance the capacity or capability of the armed forces. He described the scheme as a short-term induction into the armed forces without the necessary training and benefits.
Chidambaram’s comments came in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in Kargil, where the PM endorsed the scheme, calling it a ‘necessary reform in the Army.’ PM Modi emphasized that the Agnipath scheme aims to make the Army younger and continuously fit for war, addressing a long-standing demand for major reforms in the defence sector.
Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad also criticized the scheme, stating that the opposition alliance, INDIA bloc, would terminate it if they come to power. ‘When the INDIA alliance government comes, we will end this scheme in 24 hours and do general recruitment,’ Prasad said.
Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa highlighted other pressing issues, such as increasing terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and the smuggling of drones, heroin, and illegal weapons into his constituency. He urged PM Modi to address these concerns and the reasons behind youth involvement in drugs.
Earlier, PM Modi paid tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil conflict by laying a wreath at the war memorial in Kargil. The 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates the success of Operation Vijay in 1999, where Indian forces reclaimed strategic positions in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistani soldiers and terrorists.
