President Droupadi Murmu Renames Halls in Rashtrapati Bhavan
New Delhi [India], July 25: President Droupadi Murmu has renamed two important halls of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Durbar Hall is now called Ganatantra Mandap, and Ashok Hall is renamed Ashok Mandap.
Reflecting Indian Culture
The President’s Secretariat stated that the renaming is part of an effort to make Rashtrapati Bhavan reflect Indian cultural values and ethos. Rashtrapati Bhavan, the office and residence of the President of India, is a symbol of the nation and an invaluable heritage of the people.
Ganatantra Mandap
Durbar Hall, now Ganatantra Mandap, is the venue for important ceremonies like the presentation of National Awards. The term ‘Durbar’ referred to courts and assemblies of Indian rulers and the British, which lost relevance after India became a Republic, or ‘Ganatantra’.
Ashok Mandap
Ashok Hall, originally a ballroom, is now Ashok Mandap. The word ‘Ashok’ means someone free from suffering and also refers to Emperor Ashok, a symbol of unity and peace. The National Emblem of India is the lion capital of Ashok from Sarnath. The Ashok tree holds deep significance in Indian traditions.
Renaming Ashok Hall to Ashok Mandap brings uniformity in language and removes traces of anglicisation while upholding the values associated with the word ‘Ashok’.
