New Delhi [India], July 25: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has alleged that the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman discriminates against states ruled by the opposition. Tharoor described the Budget as politically motivated, highlighting the significant financial support given to Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

Tharoor’s Allegations

Tharoor stated that the benefits provided to Bihar and Andhra Pradesh were clearly politically driven. He noted that Bihar received Rs 26,000 crore for highways, while Karnataka received less than Rs 2,000 crore for Bengaluru’s infrastructure. He also mentioned that NDA states received calamity relief funds, whereas opposition-ruled states did not.

Protests in Parliament

On Wednesday, MPs from the INDIA bloc protested in the Parliament complex against the Union Budget. They held placards and chanted slogans, claiming the Budget was discriminatory.

Announcements for Bihar

In her Budget speech, Sitharaman announced several major projects for Bihar, including:

  • Development of an industrial node at Gaya
  • Construction of multiple expressways and a bridge over the Ganga River
  • Setting up a 2400 megawatt power plant at Pirpainti
  • New airports, medical colleges, and sports infrastructure
  • Rs 11,500 crore for flood control measures
  • Development of temple corridors and the implementation of the Kashi Model in Bodh Gaya
