Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Lammy in New Delhi to discuss strengthening the relationship between India and the UK. Modi expressed his appreciation for the priority given by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to broaden and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Before meeting Modi, Lammy also met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Lammy emphasized his commitment to elevating ties and welcomed the bilateral Technology Security Initiative and the desire to conclude a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Lammy’s visit marks the first high-level visit by the newly elected Labour government in the UK under Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Lammy, who replaced David Cameron, has served as the Labour Party’s international affairs spokesperson for over two years. He aims to reset the UK-India partnership and reinforce the UK’s commitment to securing an FTA for greater growth in both countries.

During his campaign, Lammy highlighted India’s status as an emerging superpower with a rapidly growing economy. He noted that the FTA negotiations are just the beginning of unlocking shared potential and delivering growth from Bengaluru to Birmingham. Lammy also pointed out the shared interests between the UK and India in green transition, new technologies, economic security, and global security.

Lammy’s two-day tour aims to highlight the importance of a new partnership between the UK and India, focusing on economic, domestic, and global security. He will meet with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and climate and business leaders to unlock the full potential of the UK-India partnership. Lammy will also underscore the importance of the ‘Living Bridge’ between the UK and India, representing 1.7 million people of Indian heritage who have made significant contributions to British life.

After his visit to India, Lammy is scheduled to travel to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Laos to advance UK economic partnerships and unveil new cooperation on climate and health.
