Harsh Vardhan Shringla Talks About US Elections: Trump vs. Kamala Harris

New Delhi, India – The political scene in the United States is heating up with significant developments. Former US President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt, and current President Joe Biden announced he will not seek re-election. Instead, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.

In light of these events, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, former India’s ambassador to the United States, shared his insights on the impact of the US presidential race on India-US relations. Shringla emphasized that both Democrats and Republicans support strong ties with India. He stated, “Whether it’s Democrats or Republicans, they both support the relationship with India. Even with India, there is largely consensus that a good relationship with the United States is in our interest.”

The 2024 US presidential elections, scheduled for November, are expected to be a contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Shringla believes that the India-US relationship will continue to grow stronger regardless of the election outcome. He highlighted that both Biden and Trump have made significant contributions to this relationship.

Discussing Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race, Shringla noted concerns about Biden’s ability to run another campaign. He mentioned that Biden’s performance in the last presidential debate with Trump raised doubts about his capability. As a result, Biden endorsed Harris, who has been a prominent figure as Vice President and former Attorney General of California.

The Democratic convention, scheduled for August 19, will see around 2000 delegates selecting the party’s nominee. Shringla believes Harris has an advantage due to her national recognition and continuity of Biden’s policies. He also pointed out her appeal to various constituencies, including the African-American community.

Highlighting the assassination attempt on Trump, Shringla remarked on Trump’s resilience and strong personality, which resonates with many Americans. He contrasted this with Biden’s perceived decline in health and cognitive abilities, suggesting that Harris’s entry into the race changes the dynamics significantly.
