Heavy Rain Hits Delhi and Nearby Areas, IMD Issues Alerts
New Delhi witnessed a sudden weather change on Monday afternoon as heavy rain lashed parts of the city. Visuals from the Parliament showed the downpour.
IMD Weather Warning
Earlier in the day, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas of Delhi-NCR, Yamunanagar, and Kurukshetra. Areas expected to receive rainfall included Seemapuri, Hindon AF station, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadro, Greater Noida, Gurugram, and Manesar. In Haryana, rain was expected in Karnal, Panipat, Hissar, Hansi, Siwani, Sohana, Rewari, Bawal, and Nuh.
Recent Rainfall Records
On July 18, rain brought relief from the humid weather in Delhi. In June, the city recorded the highest rainfall in 88 years, with 228 mm of rain from June 27 to June 28, and a total of 235.5 mm in 24 hours.
Yamuna River Alert
Due to the rain, water levels in the Yamuna River have risen, prompting authorities to issue alerts to residents of Noida villages along the riverbanks. These areas experienced severe flooding last year during the monsoon season.
Himachal Pradesh Rainfall
On July 21, the IMD issued an orange alert for several districts in Himachal Pradesh, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall for the coming week. Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is also expected in various districts. Earlier this month, heavy rainfall disrupted 70 roads, 51 water supply schemes, and 84 electricity supply schemes in the region.
