Indian Team Heads to Brazil for International Linguistics Olympiad

The Indian National Team is preparing to leave for Brazil to participate in the International Olympiad of Linguistics. Before their departure, the team will undergo training and attend a workshop at the IIIT Delhi campus.

About the Olympiad

Manish Shrivastava, an assistant professor at IIIT Hyderabad, explained that the International Linguistic Olympiad is a two-decade-old event focusing on language puzzles. Participants from around the world, in teams of four, compete in this school-level event. India is sending two teams of four students each, selected from the Panini Linguistics Olympiad held in February.

Selection Process

Students are chosen based on their performance in national exams held at various partner institutes like IIIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and IIT Bombay. The top performers from the Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad are selected to represent India at the international level.

Importance of Linguistics

Professor Shrivastava emphasized the importance of understanding linguistic diversity in India and its role in developing advanced AI systems. He noted that a deeper understanding of linguistic principles can help build better AI models, especially in a linguistically diverse country like India.

Participants’ Perspectives

Anshul Krishnadas Bhagwat, a student at IIIT Hyderabad, highlighted the significance of linguistics in AI and natural language processing. Faraz Ahmed Siddiqui, a freshman at IIT Kanpur, shared his experience of participating in the Olympiad and its importance in developing language models. Shri Laxmi, a first-time participant, expressed her excitement about the unique perspective the Olympiad offers on human thinking and language. Dia, an 18-year-old participant from Bangalore, spoke about the opportunities the Olympiad provides in building linguistic strengths and problem-solving skills.

Support from IIIT Delhi

Raghava, an associate professor at IIIT Delhi, mentioned that the institute is providing accommodation and classroom facilities for the team’s workshop. He emphasized the importance of supporting the team as they represent India on a global stage.
