India’s R Ravindra Calls for Stronger Actions Against Terrorism at UN Meeting
India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, R Ravindra, has called for a crackdown on terror financing and targeted sanctions on terrorist individuals and entities to counter terrorism effectively. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council Briefing on Cooperation between the UN and Regional and Sub-Regional Organisations, Ravindra emphasized that certain nations use terrorism as an instrument of State policy, which can affect multilateral cooperation, including at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Ravindra stated, “When we talk about international peace and security, you will agree that terrorism constitutes one of the most serious threats. We must, therefore, shun double standards in our fight against terrorism.” He called for full implementation of UNSC resolutions and targeted sanctions on terrorist individuals and entities.
He also highlighted the role of the SCO-Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) in strengthening cooperation among member states and called for further strengthening its role in combating terrorism, separatism, and extremism. Ravindra noted the importance of regional organizations in maintaining international peace and security, as outlined in Chapter VIII of the UN Charter.
Ravindra stressed the need for coordinated actions across borders to address contemporary security challenges, including terrorism, drug trafficking, transnational crime, climate change, and pandemics. He highlighted India’s deep ties with Central Asia and the importance of the SCO for regional peace, security, and economic development.
He also mentioned India’s assistance to Central Asia, including a USD 1 billion Line of Credit for developmental projects and grant assistance for High Impact Community Development Projects. Ravindra reiterated India’s support for cooperation between the UN and regional organizations to effectively prevent, manage, and resolve conflicts.
