Assam Government Repeals Old Marriage Law to Protect Children

On July 19, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanoongo welcomed the Assam government’s decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act of 1935. Kanoongo emphasized that child exploitation should not be tolerated, regardless of religion. He congratulated the Assam government and the children of Assam for this step.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Announcement

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the Assam government decided to repeal the old act to prevent child marriage and ensure equal registration for marriage and divorce. He stated that the Assam Repealing Bill 2024 will be presented in the upcoming monsoon session of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The State Cabinet has also directed that new legislation for the registration of Muslim marriages be considered in the next session of the Assembly.
