Indian Nationals in Bangladesh Safe Amid Protests, Says MEA
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has confirmed that all Indian nationals in Bangladesh are safe amid ongoing violent protests. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the ministry is closely monitoring the situation and has issued advisories for Indian nationals. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is personally overseeing the situation.
Jaiswal mentioned that there are around 8,500 Indian students and approximately 15,000 Indian nationals residing in Bangladesh. The MEA has urged family members of Indian nationals to stay in touch with the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh for regular updates and assistance.
The protests in Bangladesh are against the controversial quota system in government jobs, leading to several deaths and injuries. Authorities have imposed restrictions on internet, mobile services, and gatherings. The MEA has advised Indian nationals to avoid local travel and minimize movement outside their living premises.
In New Delhi, security has been heightened outside the Bangladesh High Commission as a precautionary measure. Several police personnel were seen outside the Commission office on Friday morning.
