Fire in Sichuan Shopping Mall: 8 Dead, 30 Rescued
A tragic fire broke out in a shopping mall in Zingong, a city in China’s western province of Sichuan, at 6 pm local time on Wednesday. The blaze resulted in the deaths of eight people.
Nearly 300 emergency workers and dozens of vehicles were dispatched from the local fire department to tackle the fire. The blaze was successfully extinguished by 8:20 pm local time.
Rescue operations led to the extraction of 30 people from the site, although the exact number of people still trapped remains unknown.
Such incidents are not uncommon in China, a country with inadequate safety regulations and law enforcement. Earlier in January, a fire in a mixed-use building in southeastern China killed at least 39 people and injured nine others. Another fire in a boarding school dormitory in Henan province claimed the lives of 13 children.
