Elon Musk Moves SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter) Headquarters to Texas
On Tuesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on his X handle that he is relocating the headquarters of SpaceX and the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to Texas. Musk cited several criticisms of California and the challenges of doing business in San Francisco.
Musk pointed to a new state law that bans teachers from informing families about student gender identity changes as a key reason for moving SpaceX’s headquarters from Hawthorne to the company’s launch test site in Texas. He tweeted, “This is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.”
The law was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom after a contentious debate between conservative school boards and LGBTQ+ activists. Musk also announced that he would move X’s headquarters from San Francisco to Austin, citing safety concerns about violent drug addicts near the building.
This move is the latest in Musk’s ongoing feud with California and follows his decision nearly three years ago to move Tesla’s headquarters to Austin from Palo Alto. The electric vehicle company still operates a manufacturing facility in Fremont.
The announcement has drawn reactions from both political sides. Democratic State Senator Scott Wiener, representing San Francisco, questioned Musk’s motives, suggesting that Musk has a history of making statements that are not always true.
