S Jaishankar’s Visit to Mauritius: Meeting with PM Pravind Jugnauth

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will be on an official visit to Mauritius from July 16-17. During this visit, he will meet with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and other important leaders. This visit comes about a month after PM Jugnauth visited India for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.

This visit is one of Jaishankar’s first bilateral engagements after his re-appointment. He had previously visited Mauritius in February 2021. During the visit, Jaishankar will hold meetings with senior ministers of the Government of Mauritius and engage with other prominent Mauritian leaders.

The visit aims to review various aspects of the bilateral relationship between India and Mauritius. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit highlights the importance of the India-Mauritius relationship and reflects India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’, Vision SAGAR, and commitment to the Global South. It also reaffirms the commitment of both countries to strengthen their multi-dimensional bilateral relationship and deepen close people-to-people ties.

Last month, Jaishankar visited Sri Lanka and held meetings with its leadership on various partnership issues. He also represented India at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Kazakhstan, delivering remarks on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India and Mauritius share close and longstanding relations due to historic, demographic, and cultural reasons. Indian-origin people make up nearly 70% of Mauritius’s population of 1.2 million. The leadership of both countries enjoys a high level of trust and mutual understanding, leading to close cooperation in maritime security, development partnerships, and other areas.
