Subhash Prasad Gupta Appointed as India’s Ambassador to Suriname

Subhash Prasad Gupta, who is currently serving as India’s Deputy Chief of Mission in Hanoi, has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to Suriname. This announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Subhash Prasad Gupta is a Foreign Service Officer from the 2006 batch. He is expected to take up his new assignment shortly, according to the MEA.

India-Suriname Relations

India and Suriname share close, warm, and friendly relations, strengthened by cultural and people-to-people contacts. These ties date back to the arrival of the Indian Diaspora one and a half centuries ago.

Diplomatic Ties

The diplomatic relationship between India and Suriname was established in 1976. The Indian Embassy in Paramaribo opened in 1977, and the Surinamese Embassy in New Delhi opened in 2000. Since then, several high-level visits have been exchanged.

Recent Visits

In 2023, President Droupadi Murmu made her first foreign visit to Suriname, invited by President Santokhi. This visit marked a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Earlier this year, a delegation from Suriname visited Ayodhya, a city known for its cultural and religious heritage. The delegation, led by Marinus Bee, Chairman of the National Assembly of Suriname, engaged in spiritual and cultural activities, including offering prayers at the Ram Temple and taking a boat ride on the Sarayu River.
