India to Remember 1975 Emergency as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ Every Year

The Indian government has announced that June 25 will be observed annually as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Murder Day) to remember the 1975 Emergency. During this period, many political leaders and journalists were jailed without any fault. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary stated that democracy was murdered during the Emergency. Gujarat Minister Rushikesh Patel called June 25 a black day in Indian history.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted on X that the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi strangled the soul of democracy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also supported the decision, describing the Emergency as a dark phase in Indian history. The government aims to pay tribute to those who suffered during this period and to ensure such abuse of power never happens again.
