Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh Criticizes PM Modi Over ‘Constitution Murder Day’ Announcement

New Delhi [India], July 12: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Government of India announced that June 25 will be remembered annually as ‘Constitution Murder Day’ in remembrance of the Emergency declared by the Indira Gandhi government in 1975.

In a series of tweets, Ramesh called Modi a ‘non-biological PM’ and accused him of imposing an undeclared Emergency for ten years before being defeated in 2024. He claimed Modi has systematically assaulted the Constitution and its principles.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the decision, stating it honors those who faced severe hardships during the 1975 Emergency. Shah said, ‘On 25 June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, showing her dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing an emergency in the country. Lakhs of people were jailed without any reason and the voice of the media was suppressed.’

Shah added that the observance of ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ will help keep the spirit of individual freedom and democracy alive in every Indian, preventing dictatorial forces from repeating those horrors.

Reacting to the announcement, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh accused the BJP of trying to divert attention from its anti-people policies. AAP leader Priyanka Kakkar also criticized the BJP, accusing it of undermining the Constitution since coming to power in 2014.

The Emergency of 1975 in India is remembered as a period of political turmoil and suppression of civil liberties, declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to quell political dissent and maintain order.
